We, the Haliburton County Snowmobile Association, respectfully acknowledge that the trails we are privileged to ride and care for are located on the traditional territory of the Anishinabewaki and Michi Saagiig (Mississauga) Nations. Indigenous Peoples have been stewards of these lands since time immemorial, and today, these lands are covered by Treaty 20 (1818) and the Williams Treaties (1923), which continue to shape relationships between Indigenous Peoples and settlers in this region.
We honour the enduring connection Indigenous Nations and Peoples have to this land, and acknowledge the broken covenants of the past. We recognize our responsibility to respect treaties and work towards mending relationships damaged by colonization. With a commitment to learning, healing, and reconciliation, we pledge to care for the land and each other with mutual respect, peace, and friendship for the sake of future generations
In this image, the overlay is of the Dish With One Spoon Wampum belt over the outline of Haliburton County, symbolizing a treaty between Indigenous Nations that promotes shared care of the land and resources. The ‘dish‘ represents the land we all share, while the ‘one spoon‘ reminds us to take only what we need, ensuring enough for future generations.
